Registration

Benefits in kind
Who sends it
Who receives it
Tu, ca angajator. Angajatul nu primește P6, ci propriul tax code notice.
What it shows
Pe tax year
Calculul cumulative ia în calcul tot pay-ul din tax year.
- Am informat angajatul dacă a întrebat.
Întrebări frecvente
Pot schimba tax code-ul fără P6?
Nu. Tax code-ul se schimbă doar când HMRC îl trimite printr-o notificare.
Angajatul primește și el P6?
Nu.

Tax code and P6 notice: what UK employers need to do
New employer or director of a UK company? Here is what a tax code is, what can change it, and what to do when you receive a P6 notice from HMRC, step by step.
PAYE in brief
PAYE (Pay As You Earn) is the system you use to deduct income tax from employees' wages and pay it to HMRC. As an employer, you have four jobs:
Registration
You register as an employer with HMRC before the first wage payment.
Payroll
You calculate tax, National Insurance and take-home pay at each payment.
Pension
Employees are automatically enrolled in a workplace pension, with contributions from you.
Reporting
You send payment data to HMRC through RTI, every time you pay staff.
Registration, pensions and reporting have their own pages. This page focuses on tax codes.

What is a tax code?
A tax code tells the payroll how much pay the employee can receive without tax in that year. The higher the number, the less tax the employee pays.
Decode a code
Common letters
Standard code. The employee has the full personal allowance.
Receives a transferred allowance from a spouse or civil partner.
Has transferred part of the allowance to a spouse or civil partner.
All pay is taxed at the basic rate (20%). No allowance.
All pay is taxed at the higher rate (40%) or additional rate (45%).
No personal allowance. All pay is taxed.
Benefits are more than the allowance. The difference is added to tax.
No tax at all (for example, certain employees with special status).
Emergency code. Used when starter details are missing.
What can change the code?
Benefits in kind
A company car, private medical cover or another benefit the employee receives.
Adjustments
HMRC corrects tax overpaid or underpaid in the previous year.
Personal allowance
It can change through general rules or through changes to the employee's circumstances.
Pension
Private pension contributions can increase the employee's allowance.
Previous employment
Income from another job, or a P45, can change the code.
Emergency code
When HMRC receives correct details, a W1/M1 code is replaced by a proper code.
Example: a code changing from 719L to 1257L means the allowance has increased. From 1257L to 719L, it has decreased.
What is a P6 notice?
Who sends it
HMRC, when an employee's tax code changes during the tax year.
Who receives it
You, as the employer. The employee does not get the P6, but receives their own tax code notice.
What it shows
The new code and the date it must start. It does not show the reason for the change.
What to do when you receive a P6
Previous pay and Week 1 / Month 1
With previous pay
Some P6 notices show pay and tax from a previous job. Treat it like a P45 and enter it in payroll before the first payment.
Tax year to date
Cumulative calculation takes into account all pay in the tax year. If the employee is on Week 1 / Month 1, switch them to cumulative once you have the details.
Common mistakes
- Changing a code without a notice from HMRC.
- Using the employee's P2 without a P6.
- Ignoring the notice or applying it a month late.
- Entering the wrong code or the wrong date.
Not sure or do not agree?
Ask HMRC
Employer helpline: 0300 200 3200. They can confirm how you are set up to receive notices.
The employee
If the employee disagrees with the code, they contact HMRC directly through their personal account.
P6 checklist
- I checked the notice in PAYE Online.
- I compared the code with the current one.
- I applied the code from the next payday.
- I noted the date and kept the notice.
- I told the employee if they asked.
Frequently asked questions
Can I change the code without a P6?
No. The code only changes when HMRC sends it in a notice.
Does the employee also get a P6?
No. The employee receives their own tax code notice from HMRC.
Does a P6 change past payments?
Usually not. It applies from the next payment, unless HMRC says otherwise.
What if the code looks wrong?
Apply the code you received and contact HMRC. Do not change it yourself without a notice.
